Creating Community through Art: The Journey of Purple Pie Gallery in Cardiff

Art has the power to bring people together, spark conversations, and transform spaces. For over a decade, Jenna Murphy has been part of Cardiff’s vibrant art scene, creating and selling her own artwork under the name Jenna Murphy Art. Yet, she always felt there was more to explore beyond traditional galleries. That curiosity led to the birth of Purple Pie Gallery, a creative pop-up space that has quickly become a hub for local artists and art lovers alike.

Finding a New Way to Showcase Art

Jenna’s journey began with a simple question: why limit art exhibitions to typical gallery spaces? Cardiff is home to many talented artists, but opportunities to show work in fresh, accessible environments were limited. Jenna wanted to create a space that felt welcoming, inclusive, and connected to the community.

With support from Blasus Succulent Emporium, an urban plant shop known for its creative vibe, Jenna transformed a small, unused space in Cardiff into Purple Pie Gallery. The gallery opened its doors in April 2026 as a pop-up, experimental venue focused on contemporary art and independent artists.

Building a Space for Artists and Visitors

Purple Pie Gallery is more than just a place to display art. It’s a creative hub designed to support artists and engage visitors in meaningful ways. Since opening, the gallery has welcomed over 200 visitors, hosted exhibition launches, and organized events that bring together creatives from Cardiff and South Wales.

Key features of Purple Pie Gallery include:

  • Accessible art: The gallery aims to make art approachable for everyone, removing barriers often associated with galleries.

  • Support for independent artists: Local artists get a platform to showcase their work without the pressure of commercial galleries.

  • Creative events: Workshops, talks, and collaborative projects encourage community participation.

  • Unexpected spaces: By using urban, non-traditional venues, the gallery reaches new audiences and redefines where art can live.

Connecting Creatives and Growing Together

One of the most rewarding aspects of Purple Pie Gallery is the sense of community it fosters. Artists who exhibit here often share stories of how the gallery helped them connect with other creatives, find new opportunities, and grow their practice.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

Starting a gallery from scratch is not without challenges. Jenna faced hurdles such as securing funding, managing the space, and attracting visitors in a competitive cultural landscape. Yet, each obstacle offered valuable lessons:

  • Community support is essential: Partnering with local businesses like Blasus Succulent Emporium provided resources and credibility.

  • Flexibility matters: Operating as a pop-up allowed experimentation with different formats and events.

  • Clear communication helps: Keeping artists and visitors informed built trust and enthusiasm.

These experiences have shaped Purple Pie Gallery into a resilient and adaptive space.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Purple Pie Gallery

The success of Purple Pie Gallery shows the demand for creative spaces that prioritize community and accessibility. Jenna plans to continue expanding the gallery’s reach by:

  • Hosting more diverse exhibitions featuring a wider range of media and styles.

  • Collaborating with schools and community groups to introduce art to new audiences.

  • Exploring partnerships with other urban spaces to create pop-up galleries across South Wales.

The gallery’s journey is a reminder that art thrives when it is shared openly and supported collectively.
